Q Nutrition-related diseases and protein: In this chapter you have learned about the role of protein in the body. How do we achieve balance, providing the body with the right about of protein (amino acids) to maintain health while avoiding excess? Given that we are not provided nutrition information until later in life, this is always a struggle. You have learned a healthy diet aims for a moderation, balance, and appropriate portion sizes. For protein, the individual should focus on a well-balanced diet. This includes a combination of an unlimited amount of plant proteins and 3 oz (per serving) of animal protein sources. Typically around 47-56 grams of protein per day (plant + animal sources). The reality is, the average American consumes about 100 grams of protein per day, mostly from animal products (beef, chicken, pork, turkey, cheese, yogurt, milk, etc) for 20-50 years of their lives. Unfortunately, we do not appreciate that every time we consume animal-based proteins in excess, we are also consuming other nutrients like saturated fats and cholesterol. Therefore, we are inundating our digestive system with these nutrients. What are the health implication? This is what you will be learning in this section. Provide specific examples and numbers! 4. Based on last weeks and this weeks videos/articles what nutritionally-related disease(s) are of concern to you? You can also consider family health history. 1. I learned about protein through school and family mostly. However, by school I mean that in whatever one fact knowledge the teacher would say about protein. I never took a specific nutrition class until this one. So I learned mostly through my family and friends. I used to play volleyball while I was in high school so the coaches were trying to promote good healthy eating habits because they believed it show through the way that we played and they wanted us to be as healthy and fit to play at our best all the time. I was taught that with healthy eating habits it helps your mind body and soul (helps feed it).
